For most of my youth, I lived abroad. In fact, only three years of my childhood were spent in the Netherlands before I decided to return home for university. My family and I now live happily in the Netherlands, but there’s always a small "itch" to live in another country again—to experience a different way of life, a different culture, and a different way of being.
Food is very much a part of that experience. For me, simply recalling a certain food or dish brings back such vivid memories of a different time and place in my life.
So, to honor and remember the various places I grew up, I painted a series of plates, each featuring a specific food that reminds me of my time in those countries.
Each dish was painted with oil paints on a panel using 17th-century techniques, layering paint gradually and starting with a two-tone scheme.

HOLLAND
A traditional Dutch Delft blue plate holds a classic Dutch favourite: a slice of buttered bread topped with 'vlokken' (chocolate shavings). Loved by young and old.

FRANCE
French langoustines arranged on our old, slightly battered tin plate, purchased at a flea market or puce in France.

ENGLAND
What could be more quintessentially British than scones with strawberries and cream, served on a gold-rimmed plate with painted flowers.

KENYA
Notorious for its pungent smell, I vividly remember hearing about the smelly yet delicious durian fruit when I was a little girl living in Kenya.
